Academic Affairs Department Chair Notes - Message #12
Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative
The Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative
This IU-wide project has the goal of substantially increasing the diversity of tenure-track faculty by providing three years of salary support for new tenure-track candidates. You’ve probably heard about this…how does it impact you?
Here is what happens when you have a finalist who you think may qualify for diversity funding support:
Talk with your dean or someone your dean has designated to coordinate requests. The dean sets up a phone call with Rachel Applegate.
The dean sends the candidate’s information plus a copy of your unit’s Office of Equal Opportunity report to Rachel Applegate.
Rachel Applegate will inquire of Anne Mitchell and Office of Equal Opportunity to check the self-disclosed information in the application process. This self-disclosure is essential; we may not proceed on assumptions.
After a brief review by Office of Academic Affairs (Kathy Johnson) and Office of Equal Opportunity, Rachel Applegate will send the request to James Wimbush at Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs. He is the one who will determine if the anticipated hire will advance diversity at the unit, campus, AND university level.
You are also able to use a search waiver, for the usual reasons, such as dual career or special opportunity (specialist or star).
Seeking Input
Question for Chairs to Ponder
Are your colleagues continuing to experience delays or setbacks in their research because of the pandemic? How can we support you as you support them?
Chairs have an important role in supporting faculty participation in shared governance. All of our initiatives run more smoothly and more powerfully when faculty are really engaged in the design and success of our endeavors.
Here are concrete ways to help faculty become parts of the process:
Model shared governance within your own department. That means asking for input and responding to suggestions.
Keep an eye on which faculty help your department and school and campus by serving on faculty committees. Motivate them, assign them, stress the importance. “Shared” governance is not just shared between faculty and administrators, it is “shared” between faculty. University citizenship is indispensable.
Respect, acknowledge, and reward (in merit assessments) those faculty who do more than others. Quality school service gives your department a voice in school affairs; campus service makes your department look good!
Well-functioning faculty governance raises morale, avoids unpleasant surprises, generates innovative ideas, and makes everything run better. If you have faculty who are interested in serving on a campus committee, please direct them to this page (https://facultycouncil.iupui.edu/Committees) and to contact Karen Lee (ude[dot]iupui[at]2eelk) to request inclusion on a committee.
