Academic Affairs Department Chair Notes - Message #17
Support for Adjunct Faculty
Teaching Essentials for Associate Faculty
By Terri Tarr, Director, Center for Teaching and Learning
Associate faculty (adjunct, part-time) serve a vital role in the education of our students and need to be welcomed and supported in their work on our campuses. To strengthen communication with associate faculty and increase their sense of belonging in the department, we suggest the following, if you don’t have something similar already in place:
develop a standard email from the department to welcome them and provide necessary information.
use a listserv to communicate with them regularly and to forward official campus or university announcements.
create a Canvas course to share news, resources, expectations, and teaching ideas.
establish connections among associate faculty and others in the department.
Consider sharing these resources with associate faculty to prepare them for a successful teaching and learning experience for both themselves and their students:
IU Canvas modules template. Apply the template to make it easy for students to navigate a large volume of content. More customized department or course module templates can be extremely useful.
Center for Teaching and Learning. Advances excellence in teaching practices and professional growth among all members of the campus community to enhance student learning and success.
The Forum Network and the Teaching and Learning Resources. Learn about high-impact practices, links to centers around campus to assist you with specific needs, resources to enhance student learning, and more!
