January is the month when faculty work on their annual review documentation: “annual” means “the last calendar year.”
Why is the review done? Money and time.
Each academic year’s salary is based on merit increase (depending on school finances and limited by the Trustees' 2% pool-cap), and that merit is judged according to department guidelines based on your activities.
More important, it is when you talk with your chair about how you are spending your time. What are your goals? Why have you chosen to do this or that? Published here rather than there? The cumulative effect of your time choices results in your promotion and tenure. Each year, assure that you and your chair understand your effort and goals.
