Understanding Students at IUPUI
|
|
This PDF contains information to improve your understanding of IUPUI students and how you (as a faculty member) play a critical role in enhancing student success and learning. The slide deck has been designed to provide a broad overview of IUPUI students: enrollment trends, demographics, characteristics, commitments, needs and expectations, retention and graduation outcomes, why students select IUPUI, survey results, and more.

More than 40% of IUPUI students are eligible for Pell grants and many of our students report that they need to work lots of hours to help pay for school. It’s important that new faculty know how to best support students who are financially insecure. We’re excited that the Beyond Financial Aid Committee created this website to host tips and tools for IUPUI faculty, staff, and administrators to assist under-resourced students. Check out the FAQs, blog posts, and data to find the best ways you can support your students.

“Like every city in America, Indianapolis has complicated racial history. The film Attucks: The School that Opened a City tells the story of Crispus Attucks High School, which sits on the border of the IUPUI campus. Crispus Attucks was the last segregated high school built in the country. Despite the implications of racist district policies and a lack of funding, its students and faculty made an incredible mark on the city of Indianapolis.”

Each semester, the Faculty Forum offers writing groups that provide encouragement, accountability, and a sense of community for faculty and staff. This spring, there are two ways to participate:
In-Person Writing Groups Participants are organized into groups that meet in person for two hours each week. In the first 30 minutes of the meeting, participants will discuss a writing-related topic. In the remaining 90 minutes, they will sit quietly and write. Sign up for an in-person group.
Online Writing Groups Participants are organized into groups and given access to a shared, online spreadsheet. Each day, they will record their time spent writing into the spreadsheet and "check in" on each other’s progress. Sign up for an online group
Sign up ends on January 24; the session will start on January 27. Membership is open to IUPUI, IUPUC, and IU Fort Wayne faculty and staff of all ranks, appointments, and disciplines.
For more information, visit the Faculty Crossing website or contact Andy Buchenot at ude[dot]iupui[at]tonehcub.
