Understanding Students at IUPUI
|
|
This PDF contains information to improve your understanding of IUPUI students and how you (as a faculty member) play a critical role in enhancing student success and learning, particularly during these challenging times.
The slide deck has been designed to provide an overview of IUPUI students: current retention and graduation rates, why students selected IUPUI, recent perceptions and satisfaction with experiences, needs and expectations, what barriers they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, practical tips for improving students’ experiences, and more.

More than 40% of IUPUI students are eligible for Pell grants and many of our students report that they need to work lots of hours to help pay for school. It’s important that new faculty know how to best support students who are financially insecure. We’re excited that the Beyond Financial Aid Committee created this website to host tips and tools for IUPUI faculty, staff, and administrators to assist under-resourced students. Check out the FAQs, blog posts, and data to find the best ways you can support your students.

Did you know 1 in 5 freshman students is considered below the poverty line and considered food insecure? Founded in 2013, the IUPUI Paws' Pantry is dedicated to helping relieve food insecurity in the IUPUI community. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to shop twice per month using a limit system.
IUPUI Paws' Closet, established in 2018, became the latest effort to support IUPUI students. It's dedicated to helping relieve student's financial burdens related to purchasing clothes.
Consider sharing these resources, making a donation or volunteering your time at the Paws' Pantry or Paws' Closet.

The CHAT Room is a virtual, informal space where faculty can gather to discuss timely topics related to teaching. Each one-hour CHAT Room discussion will have a faculty facilitator and a CTL host.
The series begins the first week of January 2021. The discussions are scheduled for the first week of each month on Tuesdays, 10:30–11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays, 1:30–2:30 p.m.
Topics planned for upcoming months are:
- February 2, 3: How do students experience my course? Darrell Nickolson (Engineering), Facilitator; Terri Tarr, CTL Host
- March 2, 3: Rigor, flexibility – why not both? Carrie Hagan (Law), Facilitator; Andi Strackeljahn, CTL Host
