OIA Establishes Curriculum Internationalization Advisory CommitteeThis academic year, IUPUI has engaged in the process of refreshing its Strategic Plan, and aligned with that work, the Office of International Affairs (OIA) has established the Curriculum Internationalization Advisory Committee. The committee, co-chaired by Dr. Sue Babich, associate dean of global health, Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, and Dr. Leslie Bozeman, director of curriculum internationalization, OIA, comprises representatives from several university schools and offices. With regard to curriculum internationalization and global learning, the committee’s charge is to:
One of the first undertakings of the committee is to review and revise IUPUI’s International Learning Goals (ILGs). These goals were established by a similarly comprised committee of IUPUI faculty and staff in 2006; however, knowledge and use of the goals on campus is inconsistent. Reviewing the learning goals is especially timely considering the campus’s current focus on revising the principles of undergraduate learning (PUL) and principles of co-curricular learning. The committee felt it was important to situate the revision of the ILGs in the developing PUL framework in order to show how global learning can be aligned with those principles and to maintain a cohesive and comprehensive set of student learning outcomes for the campus. Later this semester or early in the fall semester, the committee anticipates sharing the revised learning goals with the campus. With representation from the PUL Taskforce on the Curriculum Internationalization Advisory Committee, the committee has been able to incorporate key concepts from the recommended new iteration of the PULs into its framing of the revision of the International Learning Goals. Simultaneously, the committee has prepared feedback with regard to how effective the language for the new PUL document and graphic is at communicating IUPUI’s commitment to preparing graduates who will be able to ‘operate in a globalized world with skill, wisdom, and responsibility.’ The PUL Taskforce has been able to incorporate this feedback, along with that of OIA leadership, into the PUL revision process. Moving forward, the committee will incorporate the recommended revision of the PULs and other campus priorities, such as engaged learning and high impact practices, into its strategic planning process. The members of the committee are: Dr. Gabriel Filippelli, professor and director of The Center for Urban Health, School of Science Dr. Youngbok Hong, associate professor and director of Visual Communication Design Graduate Programs, Herron School of Art+Design Dr. Doug Jerolimov, instructional design consultant, Center for Teaching and Learning Dr. Josette Jones, associate professor and director of health informatics, associate professor of health informatics and nursing, School of Informatics and Computer Stephanie Leslie, director of study abroad, Office of International Affairs Dr. Suzann Lupton, assistant dean, School of Public and Environment Affairs Dr. Ian McIntosh, director of international partnerships, Office of International Affairs Dr. Kristin Norris, director of assessment, Office of Community Engagement Dr. Mary Beth Riner, associate dean for global affairs, professor of community health systems, School of Nursing Dr. Michael Snodgrass, associate professor and director of Global and International Studies Program, School of the Liberal Arts Dr. Lin Zheng, clinical associate professor and OIA faculty fellow, Kelley School of Business |

High-Impact Taxonomies: Designing Faculty Development Tools at IUPUIIn March, IUPUI was highlighted by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) in their Toolkit Resources: Campus Models & Case Studies section of their website. Check out the article where Jennifer Thorington Springer, director of the IUPUI RISE Initiative and associate professor of English, discusses how high-impact practices are available to IUPUI students but also asks the question, “Are we doing them well?” Read more about the taxonomies here and view a presentation made at the Annual Meeting of the AAC&U this past January. |

Resources for Student Conduct Issues. From time to time, you may have had a student in your classroom whose behavior teetered on the brink of civility, or crossed over to the dark side of disruption, plagiarism, or bullying. You probably have some tried and true responses (expressions of shock, deployment of guilt) but dealing with disruptive students isn’t something for which many of us receive training. Here are some policies and resources that might be of help as the semester winds down and tempers flare up:

Update from the IFC
Voting and Volunteering! On April 3rd, the Indianapolis Faculty Council approved a revision to the Constitution and Bylaws of the council, adjusting voting representation. This revision needs the assent of what the IU Constitution defines as “voting faculty”: the tenure-track faculty of IUPUI. Please respond to the email you received (tenure track faculty only) with a link, and ask questions of your school representatives or me. You also will shortly receive a survey asking for your interest in serving on IFC committees and a few new options (the University Hearing Commission and a new Ombudsteam (ombudsman office) for faculty. All full-time faculty, tenure track and non-tenure-track, are welcome to participate in these important efforts. These committees are an often-invisible but essential ‘stitching together’ of our campus as one entity. Faculty committees have been part of: PUL revisions, pedestrian safety, faculty classifications and career options for non-tenure-track faculty, library funding models, and student retention and success initiatives. Faculty governance representatives were part of the School of Health and Human Sciences (PETM-SHRS) merger, the School of Education de-merger, reviews of deans, and interviews with dean candidates. That’s only some of what ‘we’ as faculty governance do. Your participation is vital, and appreciated. Rachel Applegate |
