Coding and Titling for Acting or Interim Administrators
When someone is named as a temporary department chair, assistant or associate dean, or dean, the admin post codes should be the same as a 'regular' appointee (e.g. AAL Chairperson not HAL Acting Chairperson). The “interim” status appears in the text of the title: Interim Chair, Department of Agriculture.
The word "acting" is specifically defined in IU policy (ACA-14) to pertain only to "a temporary appointment with the understanding that when a specified condition (e.g., completion of a terminal degree) is met, the appointee will receive a regular appointment in the appointment classification indicated."
Therefore, unless there is specific language in a person's offer that makes a transition to non-acting/permanent status automatic, they are actually "interim" and this is indicated in the title description.
