Hiring Existing IU Indianapolis Faculty into a Different IU Indianapolis School
Please note that all non-tenure-track hires into the School of Medicine are processed internally by the School of Medicine.
This is temporary guidance and only applies to "IU Indianapolis" faculty and will become obsolete after the transition to IU Indianapolis.
The receiving unit has to agree to take the person on. (At present, it is believed that there is no ‘right’ for a faculty member to unilaterally decide to move to X unit.). “The unit” means “the dean.”
IF THE DEAN CHOOSES, then such a transfer does not have to involve a formal search. Neither OCRC nor OAA requires a search.
IF THE DEAN CHOOSES, a position may be posted nationally and IU Indianapolis faculty may apply for it.
Tenure does transfer, rank does not automatically transfer.
Tenured professor:
- Faculty member does not need to re-apply for tenure.
- Some faculty committee (P&T committee, subset of P&T committee, school or department P&T committee—whatever the school decides) has to affirm the appropriate rank. This can be based on a CV or whatever the committee wants to look at.
Pre-tenure, tenure-track
- The receiving unit and the faculty member should come to an explicit, documented understanding of the status of previous work, time in rank, and criteria to be used for the associate-promotion and tenure decision. It is okay to use the faculty member’s current criteria (that which they were hired with) for tenure and promotion to associate; a subsequent application for full rank would need to use the new home criteria.
- If needed, a request for an extension of the probationary period would be readily approved (but we need to document this.)
Non-tenure track, entry rank (lecturer, clinical assistant, research assistant)
- Can transfer easily
- Make sure you understand their current appointment period so they can be renewed correctly.
Non-tenure track, associate or full rank
- Transfers easily but
- A committee (as above) needs to affirm the appropriateness of the rank for the new school, using a CV or any other documentation. If the receiving unit doesn’t have its own explicit standards, it may simply use school or campus standards.
