Postdoctoral Appointment Extension Requests
A postdoctoral position is intended to be for the benefit of both sides: the postdoc learns skills, and the researcher gets skilled assistance. Because it is a learning experience, it should not be prolonged solely to benefit the researcher.
This procedure applies to non-IU School of Medicine (IUSM) postdoctoral academic appointees: AC1, RSP.
- It does not apply to those individuals classified as FLP/FEL (externally-funded postdoctoral fellows). Those follow the rules of their funded program.
- It does not apply to IUSM AC1-RSPs. Please see the IUSM website for relevant information.
Schools can appoint and renew postdoctoral AC1s through their own processes up through the third year.
After the third year, send an extension request to ude[dot]ui[at]rhdaca. The request should Include the following information:
- Employee’s name, UID, department, and supervisor
- Brief description of their position; if a job description was used in recruitment, include that
- Brief explanation of how the postdoctoral work continues to be of benefit to the employee’s career development
- Estimate of the total length of the postdoctoral position for this individual
- Any visa considerations for non-U.S. citizens/residents
Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) will give permission for the unit to apply an extension of either one year at a time, or for the total estimated length if it is sufficiently firm. The unit does not need to apply the entire approved extension at that time.
Postdoctoral AC1s may be terminated with notice of 1 pay period prior to the end of an appointment. Periods of appointment may be shorter than one year. If, for example, OAA gives permission for an extension of 2 years (five total) the unit may process a title end date eDoc for 6 months in the future and repeat if needed.
Consider the appointment option of a Research Scientist at the assistant rank (RS3). Their appointment lengths are flexible and are dependent upon funding.
For questions from HR staff, please contact Faculty Affairs at ude[dot]ui[at]rhdaca; postdocs themselves should work with their faculty supervisors.
