Duration or Repetition of Absences
For IU Indianapolis schools: Eligibility for medical leave re-sets on a calendar year basis however:
For medical leaves: Between any two medical leaves, there needs to be a return to work as at least four weeks fully returned, fully at work.
Example one: Faculty member becomes ill August 15, and is ill for five weeks, and returns to work for 10 weeks. On January 1, they are eligible for six weeks fully paid, and nine weeks half-pay during that calendar year.
Example two: 10-month faculty member becomes ill in May; receives four weeks full pay. In August, is still unable to work, and is eligible for two weeks at full pay and nine weeks at half pay. If this person does not return to work, they are not eligible for further leave in January, because there has been no return to work.
For family formation and family support leaves: There must be at least one semester (five months) of full return to work between any two leaves, and these types of leaves are limited to two instances per five years. Refer to IU policy ACA-47: Leaves for Academic Appointees for details.
For sabbaticals: There must be a minimum of four years between each sabbatical leave, no matter how many years of service the faculty member has accumulated. Be aware that all persons taking a sabbatical MUST return to work at least one year afterwards.
