Faculty Leaving IU – Not Retiring
When a full-time faculty member is leaving IU Indianapolis:
-
If they do not qualify for IU Retiree status, then it is a simple resignation (termination), not a retirement.
Non-IU-retirees are not eligible for continued access to IU systems. Please see this site for details.
If they are 10-month and not teaching or doing research in the summer, their last day worked is May 31st. Those resigning as of the end of the fall semester have the last day worked as December 31st. They may not select a different date.
Schools are not obliged to offer summer teaching or research to someone who is leaving.
If they are 10-month and are teaching or doing research, then their termination date is the end of the teaching or research time. They do not receive regular August pay, but they receive the teaching or research money and they maintain health insurance through their teaching/research time.
If they are 12-month, they are entitled to take days of vacation proportional to the amount of time they will work that calendar year: 22 days total, therefore 11 days for those leaving as of July 1st. While vacation days may not be paid in cash, someone may take them as the end of their time (sometimes called “terminal leave,” e.g. not work after June 15th, with the rest of the workdays until June 30th taken as vacation).
Giving notice: we recommend faculty give as much notice as possible so as to allow reasonable course assignments to be made. As soon as they know, and/or mid-way through the previous semester, is the best for the department.
Please ensure that leaving faculty understand the need to manage their IT services, to sign up for COBRA, and arrange for their final W-4 to be delivered accurately. They should check their physical address on file with IU.
