Deadlines, Timelines, for Third Year Review
Please note: The third year review DOES NOT use eDossier (except for Medicine). That is ONLY used for 'final' reviews for tenure, and for promotions.
All tenure track faculty, except those with three or more years of credit towards tenure, have third year reviews. This must be submitted to campus.
Schools or departments also have these options for their own faculty:
- A third year review or other formative advisory process for non-tenure track faculty preparing for promotion.
- A committee review during other years, e.g. each year a department committee reviews a CV and candidate statement; each candidate has a third, fourth, and fifth year review.
Candidates have these options:
- They may request an early third year review process if they anticipate applying for tenure early. A third year review--even if done early--is mandatory for everybody except those who join IU Indianapolis with three or more years of credit towards tenure in their offer letter (this is very rare).
- However their third year review goes, a candidate may request a fourth year review, regardless of whether that is usual for their school. This is especially useful when there is some discussion about the selection of the best type of case.
Regardless of whenever in a year someone starts, that calendar year is considered to be the beginning of their first academic year.

Typical time framework:
Third year review year (also see below):
- January: candidate should have at least a draft of a candidate statement and a CV in appropriate IU Indianapolis P&T format.
- February: candidate finalizes a candidate statement and CV; check for any other materials that the school process may require.
- March-April: committees meet: department, school; department chair and dean write letters.
- May 1st: package of all materials due to campus.
- Candidate will be provided copies of all review letters. Schools and departments may or may not take formal votes.
Year by year for someone beginning in a tenure track position any time in calendar 2024 (not school of Medicine).
- 2024-2025: academic year 1
- 2025-2026: year 2
- 2026-2027: year 3: Third year review held in spring of 2027.
- 2027-2028: year 4
- 2028-2029: year 5: spring of 2029 begins the review year
- 2029-2030: year 6: candidate is reviewed by department, school, and campus
- July or August 2030: promotion to associate rank takes effect
- 2030-2031: year 7: terminal year if unsuccessful
- July or August 2031: tenure takes effect if successful.
Calculations go like this:
Calendar year of beginning appointment + 3 plus any extension minus any years of credit towards tenure = calendar year, spring, when third year review is conducted.
Calendar year of beginning appointment + 7 (non-Medicine, or 9, Medicine), plus any extension, minus any years of credit towards tenure = calendar year, when tenure review begins.
Reviewed and revised 8/2024. Candidates should contact their chairs regarding school and department dates.
