Indy AchievesIn May 2018, Ivy Tech and IUPUI signed agreements with the City of Indianapolis and EmployIndy to launch Indy Achieves. The mission of Indy Achieves is to ensure Indianapolis has the requisite talent supply to support the available local careers by piloting, evaluating, and scaling proven practices that improve postsecondary access for Marion County youth and adults, improve postsecondary completion for all students enrolled at IUPUI and Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis, Indianapolis Campus, and improve alignment and placement in careers with purpose and value. The launch of the Indy Achieves program at IUPUI could not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of many IUPUI staff from Enrollment Management, Finance and Administration, and University College who are participating in seven different task forces to guide the planning and implementation of the Indy Achieves program. The full rollout of Indy Achieves program is fall 2019. For more information about Indy Achieves, please visit the Indy Achieves website or contact Boyd Bradshaw, associate vice chancellor for enrollment management and chief enrollment officer at ude[dot]iupui[at]hsdarbob.

IUPUI Selected to Participate in a National Alliance to Diversify STEM FacultyIUPUI has been selected as one of 15 institutions to participate in the Aspire Alliance, a three-year initiative co-led by the Association of Public & Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL), and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The APLU Aspire Alliance builds upon a previous NSF INCLUDES (Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) pilot project, designed to investigate institutional activities and develop transformational activities to broaden participation along the STEM pathways to the professoriate. The goal of the Aspire Alliance project is to improve the recruitment, hiring and retention of diverse STEM faculty and to ensure that all STEM faculty utilize inclusive teaching practices. The inaugural cohort forms an Institutional Change Network (IChange) that will engage in an institutional self-assessment process that will inform the development of a campus action plan through which to implement change. As a member of this cohort, IUPUI will have access to an array of national resources through partnering institutions and organizations that will assist in the implementation process. IUPUI’s IChange Network Team is being led by Gina Sanchez Gibau and is comprised of faculty and administrators from the Schools of Science, Engineering and Technology, and Informatics and Computing. More information on the Aspire Alliance may be found here. |

The Forum: Supporting Faculty SuccessThis spring marks the first anniversary of the Forum, an interdisciplinary resource that supports faculty collaboration, creativity, and community located in the Center for Teaching and Learning. To celebrate, we are highlighting one of the Forum’s most successful programs, the faculty writing groups. These groups promote productivity and well-being by creating a space for faculty and staff writers to “check in” with each other online and in person. Angela Murillo, assistant professor of library and information science, has participated in the Forum’s writing groups since 2018. During her time as a group member, she has published two articles, submitted three grants, and given several conference presentations. She calls the writing groups an “excellent way to hold (herself) accountable for productivity,” and credits them for providing “practical and emotional support.” To find out more, please visit the Forum’s website or swolleF muroF eht liame. Sign-up for the next writing group session that begins in April. |

New Space for Faculty CollaborationsBig changes are happening at the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)! Renovation is currently underway to increase access and functionality of the space as well as to make it more welcoming. Most exciting about the changes is the creation of a physical space dedicated to faculty that is designed to foster creativity and collaboration among faculty, especially those interested in excellence in teaching. This physical space will be adjacent to, but separate from the CTL, and will be equipped to support design thinking, creative projects, and innovations in teaching. Forum Fellows will work to establish the new space as a place to build community and collaborations among faculty. The new faculty space and the renovated CTL are expected to be complete and open for use in late April. Stay tuned for an announcement about an open house for both spaces! |

March Update from IFC President John Watson
I thought I would give you an update on a recent action by the University Faculty Council (UFC) that will impact IUPUI. As we all know, the #MeToo movement has resulted in a number of universities re-evaluating their policies related to consensual relationships between faculty and students; faculty and staff, and faculty and faculty. The UFC created a task force to evaluate the reports from other universities and compare them to IU’s existing IU Code of Academic Ethics. The task force will then address whether IU should update and change its policy on consensual relationships. The task force is comprised of one representative from each of the following: IU Bloomington, IUPUI, the IU regional campuses, the School of Medicine, and the Graduate Faculty Council. The task force is to report by May 1, 2019. Have your voice heard! Next IFC meeting: Tuesday, April 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. // Campus Center 450B |
