IU Indianapolis Reappointment Process:
Reappointments for academic appointees are made by extending the end date of their title(s). For all full-time tenure-track, clinical track, lecturers, and academic specialists, OAA will contact schools about upcoming reappointments. This happens three times during the year depending on how long the individual has been employed.
Decision points for your faculty appointment - Faculty Career Timelines. About half of faculty have an initial three year appointment. From there, they are reappointed once per year until they achieve tenure (tenure-track) or a long-term appointment (clinical or lecturer, according to school policies). Half of faculty have an initial period of one year (or one and a half--all appointments end either May 31 or June 30). Those faculty are reviewed in the winter and fall lists described below.
Letters are no longer generated for reappointments. Schools can, and should, notify faculty of reappointment. A letter is also not generated after the Board of Trustees approves the reappointments. A faculty member should consider themselves reappointed unless they have received notice of non-reappointment.
WINTER LIST- for faculty in the first year of a one year appointment
- Dashboard access provided to schools by the beginning of December
- Decisions recorded by OAA mid-January
- Deadline for campus notice to faculty of non-reappointment first week of February
FALL LIST- for faculty in the second year of appointment
- Dashboard access provided to schools by the end of August
- Decisions recorded by OAA third week of October
- Deadline for campus notice to faculty of non-reappointment mid-November
SPRING LIST- for faculty in the second year of an initial three year appointment, or beyond
- Dashboard access provided to schools by the end of February
- Decisions recorded by OAA mid-April
- Deadline for campus notice to faculty of non-reappointment May 31
For all other academic appointees (visiting, volunteers, scientist/scholars, research associates, postdoctoral appointees, administrative appointments, and adjunct faculty), each unit is responsible for tracking title end dates and extending as needed. Visiting faculty are limited to one, one-year appointment, which may be renewed for a second year. For postdoctoral appointees, after the third year contact ude[dot]ui[at]rhdaca to renew for additional years.
