The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Teaching acknowledges faculty who integrate culturally relevant content into their curriculum, employ an inclusive, student-centered pedagogy, and champion diversity as a value that ensures the academic success of all students.

Eligibility

All IU Indianapolis full- and part-time faculty. Preference will be given to faculty with at least five years of diversity impact or a history of multicultural teaching before employment at IU Indianapolis.

Self-nomination is not permitted.

Past award winners may not be nominated.

NominatorsAny member of the campus community may serve as a nominator. Nominators are encouraged to prepare their nominations jointly with faculty and students.
Criteria

Nominees should best exemplify the high standards of teaching expected at Indiana University.

Candidates should demonstrate significant contributions to multicultural education and teaching, as exemplified through their teaching strategies and practices that empower student learning from diverse, global backgrounds.

Strong candidates will demonstrate excellence in multicultural teaching practice and provide evidence of work that ascribes the dimensions of diversity and equity directly related to classroom instruction, as outlined in the current IU Indianapolis Diversity Goals.

Documentation

Documentation should include the following:

Nomination letter. A nomination letter demonstrating why the candidate being nominated makes a distinctive contribution.

Internal letters of support. Up to six letters of support from current and former students, faculty, and other academic colleagues.

  • Letters should be addressed to the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Multicultural Teaching Selection Committee.
  • Letters should support the nomination letter.

Dossier. Candidates should provide the nominator with an electronic dossier that includes:

  • Teaching philosophy statement. A short statement of teaching philosophy that outlines a reflection of their multicultural teaching practice, their goals, growth as a classroom instructor, and the perceived impact.
  • Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae. An abbreviated curriculum vitae focusing on the candidate’s teaching career, teaching-related research, and teaching activities.
  • List of courses taught.
  • Summaries. Research or publication abstracts or summaries related to multicultural teaching.
  • Evidence.
    • Evidence of course or program development, including syllabi and other descriptions of innovative multicultural and internationalized curricular development efforts.
    • Evidence of activities and leadership roles in multicultural teaching on the department, school, university, community, or national levels or any combination of these levels.
    • Evidence of professional development activities related to multicultural teaching within their discipline and higher education.
  • Evaluations.Up to three solicited or unsolicited evaluations by students, colleagues, and administrators from inside and outside the university.
    • The method for obtaining solicited evaluations should be accompanied by a brief explanation of the evaluator’s credentials. Explanations for all evaluations can be placed into one document or uploaded as individual documents.
    • NOTE: Original files from evaluators should not be altered to include this information.
Longevity of Nomination

Nominees are eligible to be nominated for up to three successive years. Nominators who elect to resubmit are encouraged to update the submissions.

Selection

The Chancellor has the right to select members of the review committee including past winners of this award, a Multicultural Pedagogy Research Group member, a Chancellor’s Professor, a Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award recipient, a FACET representative, and a representative from International Affairs.
