P&T Process Timelines
Indiana University runs one promotion and tenure cycle per academic year. This cycle ends with the Board of Trustees approving P&T recommendations. Every other due date is backed-up from this end point, allowing each review layer to do its work.
Candidates must ask their departments and schools for their timelines.
The overall organization is this:
- The "review year" is the academic year in which the candidate's dossier is considered by their department and school (summer-fall) and campus and university (spring).
- In spring of the academic year before the review year--or earlier--candidates notify their department chairs of their intent to seek promotion and/or tenure. Campus (Office of Academic Affairs) maintains a list of tenure-track faculty who must be reviewed but all other applications are up to the candidates.
- Late spring of the previous academic year, schools submit a list of candidates through teh Promotion and Tenure Console (Karen Lee in Office of Academic Affairs manages this via one contact in each school).
- The eDossier is opened for declared candidates once their school has done its submission
- School of Medicine, University Library, and some other units usually have eDossier access sooner.

Summer: candidates upload their materials and route to their department chair ("checklist/sign-off" approver).

- Late summer/early fall: Department P&T committees meet and vote.
- P&T committee chair finalizes review letter and records vote.
- Department chair writes chair letter and votes after the department committee meets and votes.
- Department chair provides copies of the letters to the candidate.
- Early-mid fall semester: School committees meet and vote.
- School P&T committee chair finalizes review letter and records vote.
- Dean writes dean letter after school committee meets and votes.
- Either the dean or the department chair provides a copy of the review letter to the candidate.
- Last Friday in October: the eDossier for each candidate must be completed and routed to campus.
