Extensions of the tenure-probationary period:
- During the calendar year 2020, about 200 IU Indianapolis tenure-track faculty received one-year COVID-related extensions of their tenure-probationary period. Faculty may still apply at their original time for a third-year review or for final review (sixth year).
- OAA and the IU Indianapolis Faculty Council Ad Hoc Committee on Revising Promotion and Tenure Standards and the IU Indianapolis Faculty Council approved language for internal and external reviewers regarding COVID effects.
- For any authorized extension of the probationary period, it is as if that year did not occur. Candidates may discuss specifcs of the effect of COVID-19, but reviewers including internal committees, chairs, deans, and external reviewers should not have productivity expectations that include that year as a work year.
- Please note that extensions are approved for a variety of reasons, such as family formation, personal or family health issues, lab or other research disruptions. In general, the language used is:
- "Candidate has received a one-year extension of probationary period."
- This is used no matter the reason (family, medical, lab, COVID-19). COVID may be mentioned but no other reason (e.g. details of medical issues) should be described.)
- Candidates whose work is still, or again, affected by COVID-19, can request an extension using the regular process: send an explanation and a request to your chair, who sends it to the dean, who sends it to ude[dot]ui[at]aao for Margie Ferguson's (Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs) approval.
